North American XPB2J-1 'Super Mitchell' by Bispro North American XPB2J-1 'Super Mitchell' by Bispro
If North American and the Navy had attempted to test the plagued Allison XT40 turborprop engines on an existing airframe instead of developing a costly and useless prototype (the XA2J-1 "Super Savage"), they might have modified a Mitchell and fitted its XT40s and streamlined nose to it... It would have been the XPB2J-1 "Super Mitchell"...

LOL! Cool concept!!
With the size of the vertical fins and rudders and the , the first V1 cut (engine failure on takeoff) would be its last...
Allison T-40 - 4000 hp each
Wright R-2600-92 - 1700 hp each

Agreed. I wasn't quite pleased with the way this one came out. I should have found something intermediary between the nose of the Mitchell and that of the Super Savage.

Nice concept. I often wonder if the B-26 Martin could have given a few more years instead of turning their very modern airframes over for scrapping so soon- by way of newer power, maybe jet.

Great minds! A jet Marauder is actually in the plans. I fact a jet Mitchell was planned originally, but I figured the Marauder would be a much better candidate for it... So stay tuned!

The French air force actually used one of their last Marauders as a jet-engine testbed in the late 1940s. The more you know!

True, now that you mention it! Actually, I recently came across an obscure Dornier project that looked a bit like a small jet-powered Marauder and this inspired my project, not the French test-plance which I'd forgotten about!

If anything, the XT-40 would have been even worse in a World War 2 bomber airframe than in a custom-designed aircraft.

Most probably! It was bad on all counts, anyway. My concept was of a no-frills, low-cost demonstrator. But with its recurring troubles and the vibrations, the XT-40 and its counter-rotating props might have been too much of a strain on the poor Mitchell's airframe.

Very nice design concept indeed!

 

One wonders, though, if she would have been beset by the same kind of problems that killed off the turboprop Constellation - would her airframe have been strong enough to cope with the extra aerodynamic loads?

I don't think so, you're right. As I said in another reply in this page, it would have been too much of a stress for the Mitchell. Ah well, one can't always restrain creativity with technical constraints!

Yes indeed - I guess that while technical limitations dictated otherwise in real life, such posters have the potential to bring ideas and concepts to life that might have been, 'if only'.

 

I recently did a very simple poster for my fictional airline which featured one such unbuilt concepts - the Fokker Phantom: fav.me/d6prjaj  From a retrospective point of view, the Phantom would have been too little (17 passengers over a 1000 km range) too soon, but it's an intriguing insight on how manufacturers hoped to apply the new technology of jet travel at this early stage of its development (1946).

I guess the Phantom would make a wonderful subject for some "what-iffery". :3

However, in a way, we already know what became of it.  Fokker exchanged some information with De Havilland, and with two additional engines in a slightly different placement, some slightly swept-back wings, and a somewhat lengthened nose, well...
